Meet the Committee 2017/18

KCL HISTORY OUTREACH COMMITTEE 2017/18

PRESIDENT: Isobelle Mason Isobelle Mason

What year are you and what do you study?

I am in my second year, and I study history. Anything modern history related, particularly Germany, has me gripped!

What do you do for Outreach and what can people come to you for?

I’m the President of Outreach, so with the help of my team, I can make the final decisions and judgments for the society, make sure things are organised and run as smoothly as possible, and delegating tasks to the committee. People can come to me with ideas for the society to partake in, if they need some advice with their volunteering work, or if they would like the society to promote their cause. I love working in a team, so I really value my committee and the hard work they do for the society.

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

If I could choose any era to live in, it would probably be the Roaring ’20s, in either America or Europe! The distinctive cultural edge of jazz, flapper dress, the marked sense of break with traditions, the prohibition. Although I’d probably make a run for it by the time the 1930s and the Great Depression rolled around.

VICE PRESIDENT: Zulekha Mirza

Zulekha Mirza

What year are you and what do you study?

I’m in Year 2, and I study History.

What do you do for Outreach and what can people come to you for?

I am the Vice-President of the society which entails a range of responsibilities, but mainly this means coordinating with the president and following her direction.

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

If I could live in another period of history, I would be in Wittenberg, Germany, in the sixteenth century. More specifically, 1517. I love studying Protestantism and its rise, and would have loved to have been around when Martin Luther first pinned his ninety-five thesis on a church door in Wittenberg.

TREASURER: Fariha Munim Fariha Munim

What year are you in and what do you study?

I’m a History finalist focusing my last year on imperial history and decolonisation, but anything from the 18th to 20th century is really interesting for me to learn about.

What do you do for Outreach and what can people come to you for?

This year I’m the treasurer for the History Outreach Society, which means I’m responsible for organising society budgets and finances- so the programme runs well with whatever it needs. You can come to me if you have any questions about the society, or want to run an event so we can see if our funds can help.

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

There are quite a few, such as the ‘Roaring 20’s and Mughal India. Though, I do have an interest and awe when it comes to the civil rights movements of the 1950s-60’s. It was a time when equality became enshrined in law and spoken out to masses, and of course there’s still a long way to go: but I find the revolutionaries of the period such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King inspirational.

Currently in my second year reading History.

What do you do for Outreach and what can people come to you for?

I am one of the Student Liaison Officers (SLO) and people can come to me if they wish to volunteer in schools. I will also be the first point of contact if you need me to pass on a message to the given school or find anything out for you!

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

This is actually a very difficult question to answer and luckily there was a BuzzFeed quiz to help me! They thought I was most matched to ‘Elizabethan England’. This however, is not correct! Truly, I would love to live in Renaissance Italy where its influence affected all things literature, philosophy, art, politics, and religion. I would also love to live in Britain 1900s being none other than a Suffragette. I would be challenging social norms whilst also demanding my right to vote!

I am one of the Student Liaison Officers (SLO) so my job is mainly to help things run as smoothly as possible and ensure that our volunteers have good relations with the schools.

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

Personally, I would like to live through the Jazz age because I’ve got a particular liking for that culture; the singing, the fashion, the way they speak, etc.

Which period of history would you choose to live in?

For me, it would have to be The ‘Roaring ‘20s’! I would love to live amongst the flappers, the jazz, the iconic dances and the distinctive fashion. One of my favourite novels, Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ captures the zeitgeist of the 1920’s so well and makes it seem like an fascinating and thrilling period to live in.
